Subject:
Knocking Noise
While Turning the Steering Wheel
ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician
Models Affected:
911 Carrera 2/4/Turbo Model Year 1992 and 1993
Concern:
When turning the steering wheel with the vehicle standing or while parking, knocking noises could occur. The reason for this noise may be very small
movements in the holding clamp of the rack and pinion steering. This, however, has no negative influence toward the function or safety of the steering.
A modified holding clamp was installed in production on the 911 Turbo as of November 1992, VIN 968 PS 480062. The 911 Carrera 2/4 was already
out of production.
Repair Information:
If a customer complains of knocking noises in the steering, the modified holding clamp can be installed. To do so, loosen and replace each clamp
separately. If necessary, clip out the ATF lines.
When installing the modified clamp, the rubber mount must be replaced. Also, clean the mounting bolt holes free from glue deposits, and torque the bolts
to 45 N-m (32.5 ft.lbs.).
After installation, check the steering wheel centering and, if necessary, correct position.
