Vacuum Brake Booster: Service and Repair
1.
Remove brake booster operating rod lock pin.
2.
Remove master cylinder attaching bolt from luggage compartment floor plate.
3.
Drain brake fluid reservoir.
4.
Disconnect electrical connectors for stop light switch, then disconnect vacuum hose at brake booster and the brake lines at master cylinder.
5.
Remove brake booster brace upper attaching bolt and the booster base attaching nuts, then remove master cylinder and booster as an assembly.
Brace and operating rod do not have to be disconnected at pedal assembly to remove brake booster.
6.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clevis for operating rod must be installed so that clevis clip can be installed from above. Operating rod must be attached when brake
pedal is at its rest position without any force applied to operating lever. The play set at the factory must not be changed.
b. Torque booster base nuts and the master cylinder bolt to 18 ft.lbs.
c. Torque support to rod bolt to 25 ft.lbs.
d. Pull brake pedal back to stop.
e. Loosen nuts on operating rod, then adjust rod until lock pin for operating lever can be installed without tension.
f.
Tighten nuts on operating rod, then bleed brake system.
g. Check operating rod play at brake pedal by manual operation with engine off. Play must be at least .4 inch (10 mm).
