Oil level characteristics Under this menu item, it is possible to adapt the instrument cluster software to the reduced engine oil quantity (approx,

0.5 litre) after replacing the instrument cluster.
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item Coding
- Select menu item "New oil level characteristics"
- The characteristics (old/new oil level characteristics) currently stored in the instrument cluster are displayed under "Oil

level characteristics". If "New oil level characteristics" is displayed, the characteristics in the instrument cluster have
already been programmed. Return to the start menu with [ESC]

- Select menu item "Oil level characteristics" and start the function with [>>].

- The following note is displayed on the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588: "The new oil level characteristics may only

be used in conjunction with the new oil dipstick. Continue with EJ".

- Select menu item "New oil level characteristics" and change the coding with [F8]. After coding has been successfully

completed, "New oil level characteristics" is displayed in the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588.

- Function successfully completed

Synchronise K-number

As of model year '02, the tolerance of the speed display has been restricted. This was achieved by changing the software "K-number" in the
instrument cluster and PCM control module. The "K-number" varies depending on vehicle type and country equipment.

Old/new oil level characteristics

In order to eliminate the "blue smoke" problem, it is necessary to reduce the engine oil quantity by approx. 0.5 litre and to replace the oil dipstick
with a modified version for vehicles up to model year '02 that were manufactured prior to 8 January 2002.

Total Mileage

Total mileage

It is possible to code the total mileage under this menu item after replacing the instrument cluster.

1. Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588 and switch on the ignition
2. Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module and press the key [>>]
3. Select the menu item "Total mileage" and press the key [>>].
4. You are requested to enter the "Vehicle Ident. No.".
5. Enter Vehicle Ident. No. or accept with the key [>>], check the entry and press key [F7].
6. Observe the instructions of the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, enter the total mileage with the tabulator keys, check and then press the [F8]

key to code the entered total mileage.

The total mileage can also be read out from the old instrument cluster under the menu item "Control module replacement" and can be transferred into the
new instrument cluster if the old instrument cluster is still functional and if it is possible to establish communication with the Porsche System Tester II
No. 9588.

The PCM2 is converted to delivery mode (low-current mode) in production. As known from other systems (alarm system, instrument cluster, roll-over
bar), the PCM2 must be activated with the Porsche System Tester II 9588.

1. Connect and start the Porsche System Tester II 9588 and switch on the ignition.
2. Select Special functions in the Vehicle type menu and confirm with the >> key.
3. Select Vehicle hand-over in the Control modules menu and confirm with the >> key.
4. Follow the instructions of the Porsche System Tester II 9588.

Air conditioning

The following versions can be coded:

Without air conditioning.

With air conditioning.
