Rear Cross-Member: Service and Repair

1.

Remove upper strut retainer attaching nuts from inside luggage compartment.

2.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove rear wheel and tire assemblies.

3.

Disconnect parking brake cable at connector and pull back out of guide.

4.

Remove brake calipers and suspend from body with wire, leaving brake hoses connected.

5.

Remove exhaust system components as necessary.

6.

Disconnect axle shafts at transmission and suspend from wire in horizontal position on rear axle crossmember.

7.

Disconnect stabilizer at lower control arm.

8.

Using suitable tool, support transmission from stabilizer bar.

9.

Remove two rear axle crossmember mounting bolts and the transmission mount attaching bolts. Note quantity, thickness and location of shims for
proper installation.

10.

Mark position of toe adjusting eccentric bolts, then remove bolts from rear axle crossmember.

11.

Place suitable jack under rear axle crossmember, then mark position of crossmember and remove remaining four attaching bolts.

12.

Carefully lower rear axle, being sure not to twist spring struts, control arms or rear axle crossmember.

13.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check spring strut seal, repairing as necessary.
b. Position rear axle, then install mounting bolts and align axle to original position as marked.
c. Torque crossmember to body attaching bolts to 33 ft. lbs., toe adjusting bolt locknut to 87 ft. lbs., brake caliper attaching bolts to 61 ft. lbs.,

axle shaft to flange attaching bolts to 59 ft. lbs. and the upper strut retainer attaching nuts to 42 ft. lbs.

d. Align transmission suspension and torque transmission mount to crossmember attaching bolts to 61 ft. lbs.
