Air in Hydraulic Clutch System

Models Affected:
Aft 4 cylinder cars produced since 1983

Condition:
Clutch pedal stays down and/or air is found in the hydraulic clutch system.

Cause:
Air may have entered the hydraulic clutch system due to low fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. For safety reasons, the chamber which feeds the
hydraulic clutch is filled from the main chamber by openings at the top. This measure prevents draining of the entire reservoir in the event of clutch fluid
loss.

Repair Procedure:
If air is found in the system, check the following items and correct as necessary.

1.

Fluid level in the reservoir must be at "MAX" indication on reservoir. Correct if necessary.

2.

The fluid supply hose to the clutch master cylinder must be routed downward. An upward rise anywhere in the hose can trap air. Correct if
necessary.

3.

Check the adjustment of the clutch pedal return spring and adjust if necessary. See Workshop Manual Vol., III, page 30-1.
