Some 1987 model 944 Turbos were manufactured with a new rear axle half shaft that is not machined to specification in the area where the small end of
the boot seals. This condition may be evidenced by slight grease seepage from that area.

To eliminate the possibility of grease seepage, 4 special boot clamps must be installed on the affected vehicles.

Vehicles involved are within the following
VIN range:

WPOAA295-HN151525 to WPOAA295-HN153069.

Dealers are requested to perform this procedure on all vehicles within the VIN range that are in their inventory or come into their service department for
service. To assist dealers in locating affected vehicles that they sold or are in inventory, a listing will be sent under separate cover.
The work procedure is as follows:
1.

Lift car up.

2.

Check for lubrication leakages on the small CV boot end.

3.

If lube has escaped and is visible on the underbody, replace the respective half shaft.

4.

If the boots are dry, install 4 clamps, Part Number 999 512 473 02. Open the clamp, push it over the boot, and insert into the respective slot of the
boot. Secure the clamp with special pliers. (See Workshop Manual page 92-2.)

5.

Clean off any lube that seeped out and lower car.

Note:

Some cars already have the clamps installed by the factory or at the PDI. No repairs are necessary for these vehicles.

Replaced axle half shafts will be requested under the routine parts submission listing.

Necessary Material:
Four clamps, Part Number 999 512 473 02 1 or 2 half shafts, Part Number 951 332 038 03

The clamps should be ordered based on 4 per car on your dealership's listing. Do not pre-order half shafts.

Check car and install 2 = 70 T.U. clamps and one half shaft
