Fuel Filler Cap Seal (Service Action 099)

Concern:
'Check Engine' light on from loose filler cap, or dislodged/deformed fuel filler cap seal.

Information:

A requirement of OBD II is to employ a diagnostic routine of the fuel tank ventilation system for the detection of fuel vapor leakage. Thus, a diagnostic
pressure test of the fuel-tank ventilation system is performed when the vehicle is stationary and at idle speed. One or more of the following faults will be
stored in the DME fault memory if a fuel vapor leak is detected:

P0441 (DTC 93) Tank vent system
P0455 (DTC 94) Tank vent system (major leak)
P0422 (DTC 97) Tank vent system (minor leak)

If the Check Engine light is on, or if the above faults are present, check the fuel filler cap for tightness and correct sealing. The filler cap may simply be
loose; or the cap seal may have previously stuck to the filler neck and subsequently became dislodged.

As of December 4, 1998, a coating of lubricant is applied to the fuel filler cap seal to prevent the seal from sticking to the filler neck. Additionally, as of
August 23, 1999 a new fuel filler cap seal is installed in production.

Vehicles within the following VIN ranges should be inspected and have the fuel filler cap seal replaced with the new type (black) seal when the vehicle is
in the workshop for service.

New/Seal for fuel filler cap, black

Work Procedure:

Remove fuel filler cap. Remove old seal (red) from fuel filler cap and discard. Install new seal (black), part number, 191 201 557 onto filler cap. Apply a
light film of petroleum jelly to seal surface. Reinstall filler cap. Lubrication of the filler cap seal with petroleum jelly should be included thereafter
whenever normal maintenance servicing is performed on the vehicle.

Note:

Only petroleum jelly is approved, use no other type lubricants on the new filler cap seal.
