Ions

Atoms or groups of atoms with a single or multiple positive or negative electrical charge.

Negative ions: anions via taking on electrons.

Positive ions: cations via giving up electrons.

Chemically the ions behave differently than their atomic counterparts. A portion of the dissolved particles found in aqueous solutions of salts, acids and
bases (electrolytes) are ions. The crystals of solid salts are also formed in part from ions (ionic lattices). Ions are affected by electric and magnetic fields.

Iron

Chemical element: Fe. Iron is a heavy metal and with its oxireductive and complexing properties is an indispensable constituent in all animal and plant
cells (trace elements).

Isocyanates

Reactive chemical group: NCO. In the polymerization of diisocyanates with dioles (dialcohols) to produce polyurethanes, PUR resins are formed, which
form the foundation for the two-component paints in part.

Isomerization

Conversion of a chemical compound into another one with the same molecular formula, but with different spatial arrangement of the atoms. This is of
special significance in manufacturing important petrochemical primary chemicals from isomer mixtures.

Kelvin

The thermodynamic temperature unit used in the SI system; 0° C = 273.15 K.

Knocking

The premature detonation of the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder of a carbureted engine due to compression heating. In addition to return pressure on the
still compressing piston, thrust, vibration, noise, wear and decreased performance result. The cause of knocking is probably formation of ignition kernels
and intermediate products, which catalyze the combustion process.

Land register

Official directory of the actual proportions of all plots of land. Emission land registers list all emissions from power plants, traffic, industry, business and
households for specific areas, primarily conurbations for the time being. According to meteorological conditions, Immission values are calculated for the
area and the average frequency of occurrence is estimated. Emissions land registers could become more important decision-making tools for planning;
there are also sewage emission (or immission) land registers or odor land registers.

Latent

Term for stored up, bound, hidden.

Lead

Bluish-gray, very soft and ductile heavy metal. Present in traces in humans, animals, plants and soil. Resorbed lead acts as an enzyme poison. It has a
direct effect on the contracting part of smooth muscles. Particular hazard presented by lead vapors and soluble lead compounds. In most new paint colors
for the automotive industry, lead components have been substituted.

Old paints may still contain lead compounds. Therefore, caution is recommended during dry sanding processes. Observe the safety regulations (dust
