Recycling

The process of returning by-products and remnants resulting from production and consumption to a production/ consumption cycle (re-usage). The
current trend towards recycling often overlooks the problem as to whether the energy and social costs including ecological damage are actually lower in
the recycling process than in the production from raw materials. Here, a further distinction has to be made as to whether the raw materials stem from
nonrenewable natural resources or if the production process includes renewable resources. Recycling helps save raw materials.

Reduction

Deoxidation, the addition of electrons. Opposite: Oxidation.

Regeneration

Regeneration is:

1. Biology: replacement of lost, worn out or shed structures in organisms, e.g. of cellular particles, cells, tissues, organ parts, organs, limbs; it is

based on the full genetic information of the regenerating cells

2. Chemistry: regaining chemical substances as well as restitution of certain chemical, biological or physical properties or states

Regenerative capacity

The ability to attain a certain biological state again after a disruption.

Regulation on waste determination

In terms of hazard potential, a distinction is made between waste requiring monitoring and waste requiring special monitoring.

The regulation determining waste requiring special monitoring covers waste materials that require special monitoring owing to the hazards specified in
the Closed Substance Cycle & Waste Management Act. The regulation supersedes the hitherto valid Regulations on the Determination of Waste
Products. The number of waste materials requiring special monitoring has been lowered appreciably.

The Regulation for the Determination of Waste Materials Requiring Monitoring covers waste materials presenting a low potential hazard. Producers of
waste must keep records on the disposal of such waste.

Regulations according to section 24 of the German trade regulations

The six regulations regulate the safety requirements for setting up and operating systems which require monitoring. These include systems such as boiler
systems; pressure tanks; elevator systems; electrical systems; spaces with danger of explosion; acetylene systems and systems used to store, fill and
transport combustible liquids over land.

Regulatory authority

The authority responsible for authorizing Systems subject to approval, e.g. regional councils, regional water or forest authorities.

Relative biological effectiveness

Abbreviation: RBE. The RBE factor is the relationship of the energy doses of two types of radiation that cause the same biological effect.
