Intake Air Heater: Description and Operation

This system is used on all Alliance, Encore and GTA models, exc. 1.4L (4-85) Calif. models, to prevent intake system icing and promote better fuel
atomization. Heated air, drawn from a shroud around the exhaust manifold, is mixed with outside air in the air cleaner. The system consists of a double
inlet air cleaner, Fig. 10, with a distribution flap for regulating warm and cold air. The distribution flap is controlled by a wax pellet type thermostat
which is fixed to the air cleaner body in the intake stream.
When intake air temperature is below 79°F, the thermostat contracts, shutting the flap to the outside air intake. When intake air temperature rises above
97°F, the thermostat expands, closing off warm air intake.
Testing
1.
Remove air filter housing.
2.
Remove filter from housing.
3.
Immerse filter housing in container of water up to height of filter.
4.
With water temperature at 79°F, the cold air inlet should close after 5 minutes.
5.
With water temperature at 97°F, the warm air inlet should close after 5 minutes.
