Alignment: Service and Repair
Preliminary Check

1.

Road test vehicle noting any abnormal steering or handling characteristics.

2.

Ensure tires are the proper type, correctly inflated and that tires on each axle are the same size.

3.

Inspect ball joints, suspension arms, bushings and tie rods, and repair or replace any component that is damaged or excessively worn.

4.

Ensure wheel runout is not excessive, and that wheel bearings are properly adjusted.

5.

Check underbody height (ride height) and correct as needed. If ride height is not within specified ranges, check for excessive or uneven vehicle
loading, weak springs and damaged suspension components.

6.

Jounce vehicle several times to settle suspension.

7.

Place vehicle on suitable alignment rack following manufacturer's instructions.

8.

Center steering gear as follows: 

a. Turn steering wheel to full left turn position, then place reference mark on steering wheel rim.
b. Turn steering wheel to full right turn position, counting number of turns necessary.
c. Turn wheel back to the left, one-half the number of turns counted in previous step, then secure steering wheel in this position. If steering

wheel is not straight with steering gear centered, remove wheel and align as needed. If front wheels are not in straight ahead position
adjust tie rods to obtain correct toe, as needed, prior to performing other checks.

9.

Check and correct alignment angles in the following sequence: Rear toe and camber, caster, front camber and front toe.

10.

Correct any angle that is not within specifications. If no adjustment is possible, check for damaged or worn suspension components and/or
damaged or distorted chassis and correct as needed.
