Information
A combination oil seal and bearing assembly has replaced the separate crankshaft pilot bearing and clutch housing oil seal assemblies used previously.
The new seal and bearing assembly is mounted in the clutch housing bore (Fig. 1). An extended outer track ring on the bearing also serves as the
throw-out bearing support and slide surface. The bearing is lubricated through oil channel B in the clutch housing and oil hole A in the bearing outer
track ring (Fig. 1).
Filing Instructions
I.S. Notes with the M.R. 171 designation are to be filed in the new M.R. 171 binder which will be issued shortly. Until this binder is available, please file
all M.R. 171 I.S. Notes at the front of your Mechanical S.R.T. manual.

Service Identification and Interchangeability
Manual transaxles designed for use with the new seal and bearing assembly have a short clutch shaft without a pilot bearing hub (Fig. 2). Prior model
transaxles have a long clutch shaft with a pilot bearing hub (Fig. 2). The new short clutch shaft does not extend into the crankshaft.
NOTE:
Both types of manual transaxles and clutch housings will be supplied for service use. Be sure to identify the type of clutch shaft and housing
before ordering parts or proceeding with reassembly. A pilot bearing must be used with the long clutch shaft but is not needed with the newer
short shaft. In addition, a separate clutch housing seal is required with prior model clutch housings. The new short clutch shaft can be used on
crankshafts which are drilled for a pilot bearing.
Clutch Disc Replacement
Clutch disc replacement procedures are basically unchanged for models with the new seal and bearing assembly and short clutch shaft. The only
exception being that a clutch disc aligning tool is not needed during disc replacement.
