Engine Oil: Description and Operation

Engine oil

Oil grade
For regular oil changes, we recommend Saab or Mobil products. They are developed especially with high-grade components to meet the demands of
extended service intervals (max 30,000 km or 2 years).

Saab and Mobil oil is tested and approved according to GM standards, which are aimed at long-life oils. These oils are designated GM-LL-A 025 for
our petrol engines. The same demands apply also to diesel engines but with designation GM-LL-B 025. In order to safeguard the operation of the
engine with regard to both lubrication and its ability to loosen deposits and neutralise the combustion residue in the oil, approved designations
GM-LL-A 025 (petrol engines) or GM-LL-B 025 (diesel engines) must be used during service intervals 30,000 km or max 2 years.

Only oils with the above designation may be used.

Oils with the above designations contain the additives that are necessary for reliable operation. Saab advise against the use of any other additives.

The petrol engine oil is unique as besides fulfilling the highest demands of the API and ACEA standards, it also meets with the ACEA requirement of
fuel-saving properties.

Other quality classifications
API and ACEA standards can also be found on containers with GM designation GM-LL-A 025 and GM-LL-B 025. The API (American Petroleum
Institute) classification for petrol engines can include quality classifications SH (from 1993), SJ (from 1996) and SL (from 2001) that meet with the
highest requirements.

These classifications are often combined with corresponding classifications for diesel engines. The classification designations for diesel engines have
the initial letter "C" (Commercial). A quality combination can then be API SJ/CF or SL/CF. According to ACEA designations, oils are divided into
classification "A" for petrol engines and classification "B" for diesel engines. There are further classifications for heavy diesel engines.

Each classification has three or four quality levels (diesel), where level 2 or 3 (4 for diesel) usually involves products containing some synthetic-based
or fully-synthetic components. In the same way as the API system, petrol and diesel engine specifications can be combined in one product for use in
either engine type. A quality designation can therefore be ACEA A2/B2 or ACEA A3/B3-B4

Viscosity
Oil viscosity (fluidity) is classified according to the SAE scale (SAE = Society of Automobile Engineers). Modern oils for passenger cars are all
so-called multigrade oils, which means that the oil has properties that help starting in cold conditions while still possessing a viscosity that is sufficient
to maintain a strong film of oil to protect all bearing surfaces in all operating conditions.

Two viscosity levels are given for multigrade oils, e.g. 0W-30, where 0W fulfills viscosity requirements at -30°C and 30 fulfills requirements at 100°
C. Approved petrol engine oil GM-LLA 025 has viscosity designation SAE 0W-30. Approved diesel engine oil GM-LL-B 025 has viscosity
designation SAE 5W-40.
