Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

Replacement Of Crankshaft Seal Behind The Flywheel (in Car)

To Remove

1. Remove the transmission, see Transmission and Drivetrain.
2. On models with manual trans., remove the clutch and pressure plate, see Transmission and Drivetrain.

3. Remove the flywheel or driven plate.
4. Use a screwdriver to pry out the old seal, taking care not to damage the sealing surface.

To Fit

1. Lubricate the seal, place it on fitting tool 83 94 884 and screw same on the crankshaft. Press the seal into place by screwing the tool together.

When the tool bottoms the seal is correctly positioned.

2. Fit the flywheel or driven plate.

Tightening torque:
-

(Manual Trans) flywheel 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.) 

-

(Auto. Trans) driven plate 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).

3. On models with manual trans., fit the clutch and pressure plate.
4. Fit the transmission.
