Vacuum Tank - Noise During Cold Start

VACUUM TANK NOISE AT COLD START
ALL 900, M79-

ISSUE: 04/85-758

A noise at the vacuum tank may occur on certain cars immediately after a cold engine start-up. The noise generally goes away after a few seconds but
nonetheless can be irritating.

Repair Details:

1.

Unplug the connections at the vacuum tank and remove the tank. 16 Valve Turbos require that you move the power steering reservoir to one side
and raise the tank as shown in the drawing.

NOTE:

It is possible to break the inlet and outlet fittings on the power steering reservoir. Push the hoses through the inner fender rather than pull
ing them with the tank.

2.

Carefully pry off the top part of the check valve with a screwdriver. The top part is a snap fit and prying should be done a little at a time around the
circumference of the cap.

3.

Shorten the spring 1.5 turns with cutting pliers.

4.

Refit the spring and top part of the check valve. Refit the vacuum tank and connect the hoses.

Warranty Information:

For warranty repairs, use Failure Code 85480-04-0-01-05. Time allowance for repair is Labor Operation #85466 (0.2 hour) plus 0.1 hour Straight Time
to shorten the spring.
