1.

Remove locknuts and tie rod ends.

2.

Remove rubber bellows and breather tube, Fig. 1.

3.

Disconnect hydraulic lines between steering valve and hydraulic cylinder from steering gear.

4.

Remove radial adjustment locknut from rack and remove adjusting plug and spring.

5.

Tap steering knuckle housing carefully against workbench to remove bearing piston.

6.

Remove cover under steering valve and remove nut on shaft. Use an 11/16 inch socket or a soft jawed vise to grip the top of the steering valve
shaft.

7.

Remove dust cover snap ring from upper end of steering valve.

8.

Press steering valve out of steering gear housing. The needle bearing, bearing support, hydraulic seal, and dust cover will come free with valve. 
Knocking or tapping the valve unit may result in damage.

9.

Remove inner ball joint furthest from pinion as follows:
a. Clamp rack in soft jawed vise.
b. Push plastic sleeve (end stop) covering ball joint's flats out of way.
c. Unscrew ball joint.

10.

Remove snap ring from end of hydraulic cylinder as follows:
a. Push rack as far toward hydraulic cylinder as possible.
b. Install sleeve tool No. 8996407 or equivalent, over rack, and press in spring seal housing by screwing in inner ball joint.
c. Press in wire end of snap ring through small hole in steering gear housing.
d. Pry off snap ring using two screwdrivers or a wire hook made from a 1mm piano wire.
e. Remove ball joint and sleeve tool.

Remove ball joint nearest pinion.

12.

Press out rack together with hydraulic seal, washer and bushing. Before removing bushing and hydraulic seal from rack, remove any burrs on
end of rack using a fine file.

13.

Remove inner rack seal using seal removal tool No. 8996399 or equivalent, and a long drift.

14.

Remove snap ring and lower pinion bearing.

15.

Remove sealing ring and bushing on top of pinion. Lubricate pinion, rack teeth, bearing and dust cover seal with 2.1 oz. (60 g.) of lithium
grease equivalent to Shell EP2, B2, Code 71303. Lubricate hydraulic components with Texaco power steering fluid 4634, part No. (45)
3009800 or equivalent.

16.

Install lower pinion bearing and snap ring. Enclosed side of bearing should face down. Chamfer of snap ring should face out.
