Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

LESS AIRBAG

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Remove safety padding from center of steering wheel.

3.

Remove center nut and washer, then install puller tool No. 89 96 258 or equivalent.

4.

Remove steering wheel.

5.

Using two screwdrivers carefully pry off the direction indicator switch.

6.

Reverse procedure to install, torquing center nut to 21 ft. lbs.

WITH AIRBAG

1.

Disarm airbag system, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair. 

2.

Position wheels in a straight ahead position, then remove two horn pad/airbag module retaining screws from rear of steering wheel.

3.

Disconnect horn pad/airbag module electrical connectors, then remove from vehicle.

4.

Place matchmarks on steering shaft and steering wheel, then remove steering wheel nut.

5.

Using a puller, gently ease steering wheel off of shaft so that airbag clock spring is not damaged.

6.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Set wheels in a straight ahead position.
b. Rotate clock spring clockwise until it stops, then rotate counterclockwise 3 1/2 turns.
c. Hold clock spring in position, then thread airbag module and horn wiring through hole in steering wheel.
d. Align match marks on shaft and steering wheel, then align clock spring with hole in wheel.
e. Torque steering wheel nut to 24-32 ft. lbs.
