Wheel Hub: Service and Repair
Front Suspension
1.
Position spacer tool No. 8393209 or equivalent, under upper control arm.
2.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
3.
Remove hub center retaining nut and thrust washer.
4.
Rotate brake rotor so that recess in edge of rotor lines up with brake pads, then remove brake pads.
5.
Remove brake caliper and hang it to one side so that brake hose and pipe are not damaged.
6.
Remove brake rotor from hub.
7.
Use taper breaker tool No. 8995409 or equivalent, to remove the tie rod end from control arm.
8.
Remove bolts securing upper and lower ball joints in control arms, then remove steering knuckle housing with hub from control arms and
driveshaft.
9.
Use sleeve tools Nos. 7841067, 8996449 and support plate tool No. 8996456 or equivalents, to press off hub. Pull inner bearing race off hub using
universal puller. If there are no recesses for puller, chisel off race. Pressing off hub destroys the bearing, so it must be replaced.
10.
Remove circlips from steering knuckle housing and press out bearing using sleeve tools Nos. 8390114, 8996449 and support plate tool No.
8996456 or equivalent.
11.
To assemble, lubricate bearing recess in steering knuckle housing with Molykote Paste G or equivalent.
12.
Use sleeve tool No. 8390114 and support tool No. 8996464 or equivalent, to press in bearing until it contacts circlip.
13.
Install outer circlip.
14.
Use sleeve tool No. 8390114 and support tool No. 8996464 or equivalent, to press hub into bearing.
15.
Lubricate driveshaft splines with Molykote Paste G or equivalent, then install driveshaft into hub.
16.
Replace steering knuckle housing by reinstalling the ball joints to upper and lower control arms.
17.
Install hub nut, thrust washer, brake rotor, brake caliper and brake pads.
18.
Install tie rod to control arm.
19.
Install wheel, lower vehicle and torque hub nut to specifications. Lock hub by punching flange into stub axle groove.
20.
Remove spacer tool No. 8393209 or equivalent, from below upper control arm. Pump brake pedal until brakes begin to operate. Do not move
vehicle until brakes are operating properly.
