HISSING NOISE FROM POWER STEERING
ISSUE:

APPLICATION: 1986 9000 TURBOS UP TO MID-YEAR PRODUCTION, -G1017236
A new rubber-filled intermediate shaft and a more efficient noise insulation shield have been introduced to reduce the hissing noise emitted by the power
steering rack. These improvements were introduced into mid-year production and can also be fitted to earlier cars if a noise complaint exists. Do not
install on cars built after the above given VIN Serial No.

Repair Details
1.
Remove the old insulation shield/safety pad from beneath the instrument panel.
Fold back the carpet where the steering column passes through the firewall.
2.
Remove the pinch bolt in the lower clamp, loosen the bolt in the upper clamp and remove the intermediate shaft. Install the new shaft P/N 89-
67-523 in the reverse order and tighten the bolts to 26-32 ft.lbs. (35-42 N-m).
Check the centering of the steering wheel afterwards by test driving. Correct as necessary.
3.
Install the new insulation shield/ pad (P/N 96-71-017) beneath the instrument panel.

For claims use Failure Coding 64135-40-0-01-01. Labor allowance is operation no. 64135 for 0.7 hour (add this operation
to your 9000 Failure Code/Flat Rate Manual, P. 6-3).
