Operation
The supply to brake light switch 29 is taken from fuse 24. When the switch is actuated, brake lights 30 will be energized across filament monitor
228A.
The brake lights of the trailer are supplied directly from the brake light switch across connector 258 for the tow bar.
If one of the brake light bulbs should fail, the relay for the brake lights in the filament monitor will be energized and terminal C1 will be earthed. Since
a positive voltage (from fuse 13) is supplied to terminal 7 (1987)/terminal 9 (1988) of the pictogram, the warning lamps for the rear lights and the
central warning lamp will light up. See also the section entitled "Pictogram - Filament monitor".
Cars for the US, CA, JP, ME, FE and AU markets are fitted with two extra leads/jumper cables on the brake lights so that two lamps will light up on
each side of the car. Cars for the SE, FI and GB markets are not fitted with these leads.
US and CA markets
Cars for the US and CA markets are also fitted with brake light 109.
The filament monitor for this market includes an extra function for brake light 109. Should the light bulb fail, terminal C1 will be earthed and the
warning lamps for the rear lights and the central warning lamp in the pictogram will light up.
Fault-tracing hints
1. Check fuse 24 and check that the supply to it is live.
2. Check that the supply to brake light switch 29 is live.
3. Actuate the brake light switch. Check the bulbs, the power supply and the earth connection at each lamp.
4. Check the filament monitor.
5. Check the connectors, wiring and earth connections.
For particulars of fault tracing on the pictogram, see the section entitled "Pictogram - Filament monitor".
NOTE:
Whenever changing a bulb, always use a bulb of the correct rating. The lamps in the pictogram may otherwise light up due to imbalance in the
filament monitor coil.
