Steering Gear: Description and Operation
RACK AND PINION
The power assisted steering system is of rack and pinion type, the main components of which are a control valve, a servo cylinder and also a servo
pump in the main part of the system.
The pump supplies fluid under pressure to the control valve which, according to which way the steering wheel is turned, directs the flow to the right or
left side of the cylinder. The fluid inside the cylinder acts on the rack, thus providing power assistance to the rack and pinion gear. The mechanical
components of the rack and pinion gear are lubricated with high viscosity grease and sealed from other parts by means of seals and rubber gaiters.
