Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

NOTE:  On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts for air bag disarming procedure. 

1. Vehicles with audio coded antitheft system refer to Accessories and Optional Equipment / Radio for radio code procedure.
2. Position wheels in straight ahead position, then remove two horn pad/air bag module retaining screws from rear of steering wheel.
3. Disconnect horn pad/air bag module electrical connectors, then remove from vehicle.
4. Place match marks on steering shaft and steering wheel, then remove steering wheel nut.
5. Using puller, gently ease steering wheel off of shaft so air bag clock spring is not damaged.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Set wheels in straight ahead position.
b. Rotate clock spring clockwise until it stops, then rotate counterclockwise 3 1/2 turns.
c. Hold clock spring in position, then thread air bag module and horn wiring through hole in steering wheel.
d. Align match marks on shaft and steering wheel, then align clock spring with hole in wheel.
e. Torque steering wheel nut to 24-32 ft. lbs.
