Procedure For the Preparation of ABS/Pc Plastic Replacement Parts

PROCEDURE FOR THE PREPARATION OF ABS/PC PLASTIC REPLACEMENT PARTS

Upon the receipt of the primed replacement parts it will be necessary to inspect for surface imperfections that may result from dirt in the primer or
damage to the part from shipping. If at any time during this inspection defects are found that will require repair, special care must be given to the part to
ensure that the substrate is not exposed. If the substrate is exposed as the result of sanding or scratches incurred during shipment, application of an
aggressive paint system may allow solvent migration into the substrate which will lead to a swelling of the leading edge of the damaged coating. To safe
guard against this frustrating possibility, the following PPG procedure was developed to provide a less aggressive barrier coat between the substrate and
the refinish system.

1. Wash the entire area with warm water and mild detergent.
2. Thoroughly rinse the repair area with clean, fresh, warm water and dry off.

NOTE:  It is important to wipe the cleaner dry with a clean dry cloth BEFORE it evaporates.

3. Wash the repair area with PPG D837 Acrylic Clean(TM) (or equivalent) to remove all surface contaminants that were not removed by the soap

and water

4. Sand out the defect with 220 grade sandpaper.
5. Feather the leading edge of the repair area with 320 grade or finer sandpaper. In this step a sand scratch should be established to extend a few

inches beyond the repair. Compound the undamaged portion of the panel.

6. Wash new part thoroughly with soap and water.
7. Wash the entire panel with D837 Acrylic Clean(TM) (or equivalent).
8. Apply one to two coats of D860 or D859 Deltron(R) Waterborne Primer (or equivalent), and allow to dry properly.
9. Block sand with 400 grade or finer sandpaper.

10. Wash the entire panel with D837 Acrylic Clean(TM) (or equivalent).
11. Complete the repair using the BC paint system (or equivalent) spot repair as refinish procedure.
