Tachometer: Testing and Inspection

If the speedometer or tachometer is inoperative, a voltmeter can be used to see if there is an active signal present. Since the duty cycle of the signal is
always 50 percent, the voltage will be averaged. Therefore, if the signal is present, you will see half of the ignition voltage. If the signal is stuck Hi, you
will just get ignition voltage. If the signal is shorted to ground, of course, you will get zero volts. The cruise/cluster tester can be used to supply a 97 +/-
5 km/h (60 +/- 3 mph) signal to the cluster. This can be done even if there is no cruise on the car. The cruise connector is present on all cars except the
SL without ABS and can be found tapped on the driver side of the HVAC module. Be careful using the cruise/cluster tester as it adds mileage to the 
odometer.

If the speedometer or tachometer is functional (but may seem inaccurate), use the PDT to compare vehicle speed and RPM's.

SPEEDOMETER

Drive car at a known speed to verify that the speedometer functions properly.

Use the portable diagnostic tool (PDT) to compare the (mph/Km/h) on the speedometer to the (mph/Km/h) on the PDT with the engine running.

Use the Cruise/Cluster tester to supply a speedometer signal to the I/P cluster without the engine running. Use a diagnostic service probe to connect to
the speedometer circuit at the back of the I/P cluster or connect the Cruise control to the Cruise/Cluster tester. This will supply a 97 Km/h (+/-5 Km/h)
(60 mph [+/-3 mph]) signal to the speedometer.

TACHOMETER

Run the vehicle at several different RPMs to verify that the tachometer is functioning properly.

Use the PDT to compare the RPM on the tachometer to the RPM on the PDT with the engine running.

Use the Cruise/Cluster tester to supply a tachometer signal to the I/P cluster without the engine running. Use a diagnostic service probe to connect the
Cruise/Cluster tester to the tachometer circuit.

IMPORTANT: The wire harness at the ignition module must be disconnected for the tachometer signal to function from the cruise/cluster tester.
