Timing Chain Tensioner: Testing and Inspection
Inspect the tensioner for operation:
a. Release the plunger lock and make sure the piston moves freely.
b. Make sure the oil feed hole is open and not plugged. Submerge the tensioner in oil or solvent. Depress the plunger and observe fluid flow from the
tensioner body. Inspect the cylinder block port for blockage.
c. Measure plunger travel (chain and guides installed). Standard is 1.77-11.14 mm (0.0696-0.438 inch) and service limit is 21.0 mm (0.8626 inch)
max.
