Pressing Any Button on Saturn RKE Fob, Sets Off Alarms on Some Automotive Security Systems (Security System Needs to be Reprogrammed)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1996 Saturns equipped with optional remote keyless entry (RKE) system
CONDITION:
When customers use their RKE system hand-held transmitter (Fob) to operate the RKE system, it may cause a security system, installed on another
vehicle in the vicinity or their vehicle, to trigger an alarm.
CAUSE:
Some automotive security systems can accept four transmitter codes. When less than four transmitter codes are programmed, "dummy-codes" are used to
fill the empty transmitter code locations. These "dummy-codes" match the "wake-up message" transmitted by the Saturn RKE system hand-held
transmitter when any button is pressed. When the security system receives this message, it may interpret the message as a "panic alarm," and sound the
siren and flash the lights of the vehicle in which it is installed.
CORRECTION:
To eliminate this condition, the affected security system must have four transmitter codes programmed into the controller. Each time a hand-held
transmitter is programmed into the controller it takes up one of the memory locations. One hand-held transmitter can be used to fill all four memory
locations, or multiple hand-held transmitters can be used to fill all four memory locations; as long as all four memory locations, in the security system
controller are filled.
