Tapping Noise Coming From Dash/Cowl Area (Replace Plenum Drain Valves)

MODELS AFFECTED: 
1995-1996 Saturns

CONDITION: 
A tapping noise may be heard coming from the dash/cowl area at speeds above 97 km/h (60 mph).

CAUSE: 
Condition may be caused by air turbulence in the engine compartment causing the plenum drain valves to "flap," resulting in a tapping noise from the
dash/cowl area.

CORRECTION:
Follow the procedure in this bulletin to verify the cause of the condition.

PROCEDURE

1.

Test drive vehicle at highway speeds until tapping sound is heard.

2.

If tapping sound is heard, tape plenum drain - valves shut. Drive vehicle at highway speeds to determine if tapping noise goes away and that the
drain valves are the source of the tapping noise.

3.

If test drive and taping of the plenum drain valves verifies that the condition is caused by the plenum drain valves flapping, replace plenum drain
valves with new plenum drain valves (P/N 22586047). (The new plenum drain valves have a weight added to the bottom to help prevent them from
flapping.)

If tapping noise is still heard with plenum drain valves taped shut, refer to "Windnoise Diagnosis and Repair" in the "Body/Repair Service
Manual."
