Camshaft: Service and Repair
1. Remove cylinder head, timing gear and timing chain. Refer to Cylinder Head Assembly/Service and Repair/Cylinder Head Replace. See:

2. Replace and Front Cover. Refer to Timing Components/Timing Cover/Service and Repair/Front Cover Replace. See: Timing

3. Remove spark plugs.
4. Remove intake and exhaust manifold attaching nuts, then the manifolds.
5. Remove rocker arm assembly attaching bolts, then remove two rocker arm shafts and rocker arm guide plates and lifters.
6. Remove battery cover and battery, then using suitable punch and hammer, remove rear camshaft plug.
7. Measure camshaft thrust clearance while moving camshaft back and forth, using a dial indicator.
Standard thrust is 0.0028 - 0.0079 inches
Service limit is 0.0098 inch
If clearance is not as indicated, replace camshaft and/or thrust plate.
8. Remove camshaft from rear of cylinder head.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. If camshaft is removed through rear of cylinder head, install new plug.
