Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Timing Chain and Sprockets Replacement
Timing Chain, Sprockets, Guides and Tensioner Inspection
1. Inspect chain for wear and damaged links.

2. Using ruler, measure chain inner diameter, Fig. 25.
Standard I.D. is 16.50 - 16.61 inch
Service limit is 16.77 inch

3. Inspect chain guides for wear and cracks, measure chain track wear, Fig. 26.
Standard is 0.0 inch
Service limit is 0.0984 inch.
4. Inspect timing sprocket teeth on crankshaft, camshaft and key for wear. Inspect camshaft thrust plate and sprocket thrust surface for cracks and
wear.
5. Inspect tensioner operation, release plunger lock, ensure piston moves freely.
6. Ensure oil feed hole is open, submerge tensioner in oil or solvent, depress plunger and check flow from tensioner body, check cylinder block port
for blockage.
