Cigarette Lighter: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
Circuit Operation
The cigar lighter is a convenience item which utilizes the principle of resistance heating to heat a metallic winding to a temperature hot enough to ignite a
cigar or cigarette.
OPERATION
Voltage is applied at all times to the cigar lighter, directly from the battery (through a
20 amp fuse).
When the cigar lighter handle is pushed in to its detent position, an electric circuit is completed through the high resistance winding of the cigar lighter.
Current flows through the circuit to the winding inside the cigar lighter, to the cigar lighter shell, to ground. When the cigar lighter latching device heats
by way of conduction to a calculated temperature, the bi-metal latch releases the knob assembly and returns it to its original position. This causes the
circuit to open and the current flow to cease.
Components
Foreign Objects
Check lighter and socket for foil gum wrappers, change, etc.
Cigar Lighter
Try a known good lighter to determine if the original lighter is good or bad.
Examine lighter socket for damaged caused by insertion of other plugs or objects.
If this component is good go to the next item indicated on the Complaint-Condition Chart.
Cigar Lighter bulb
Check connection and terminal for damage, tightness, or corrosion.
Visually inspect the bulb.
Check resistance through the bulb.
Replace as needed.
If this component is good go to the next item indicated on the Complaint-Condition Chart.
I/P Dimmer
Perform the following checks at the instrument panel dimmer harness connector, with the instrument panel dimmer disconnected.
Pin A Continuity to Ground
Pin B Battery Voltage with Park Lights On
Pin C Battery Voltage with Park Lights On
Replace as needed.
If this component is good go to the next item indicated on the Complaint-Condition Chart.
Fuses
IP BATT Fuse
Location: Underhood junction block
Type:
30A Maxifuse
Feeds: Circuit 402
If one of the following systems is operating normally, the fuse is most likely good.
^
Headlamp switch
^
Dome lamp
^
Remote mirror switch
^
Map lights (SL/SC only)
^
Power door locks
^
Radio
If the fuse is blown determine the cause of the blown fuse and repair.
Replace fuse as needed.
If this component is good go to the next item indicated on the Complaint-Condition Chart.
LOCKS Fuse
Location: Instrument panel junction block
Type:
20A Minifuse
Feeds: Circuit 740B
If one of the following systems is operating normally, the fuse is most likely good:
^
Power door locks
^
Cigar lighter
If the fuse is blown determine the cause of the blown fuse and repair.
