Coolant: Service and Repair

ENGINE COOLANT CHECK AND REPLACEMENT

1. Check engine coolant level in surge tank. The coolant level should be at the FULL COLD line depending on engine temperature. If low, check for

leaks and add coolant up to the FULL COLD line.

2. Check engine coolant quality. There should not be any rust deposits or scales in the surge tank or pressure cap and the coolant should be free from

oil. If excessively dirty, flush system and replace cap as necessary.

CAUTION:  The engine's cooling system thermostat and water pump will not function correctly if oil is found in the cooling system.
Cooling system must be flushed and the water pump and the thermostat's cartridge replaced.

WARNING:  Do not remove cap or open cooling system drains from a hot system. allow system to cool first.

3. Replace engine coolant:

a. Remove the pressure cap.
b. Drain the coolant from the radiator and engine drain plug located at the right front of the engine block.

NOTE:  A two gallon container will be required to hold the coolant.

c. Close radiator drain plug and install cylinder block drain plug. Torque engine drain plug. Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

NOTE:  Vehicle must be level when filling with coolant.

d. Fill the system with coolant. Use only a non-phosphate ethylene glycol-base coolant, mixed according to the manufacturer's specification.

NOTE:  Whenever engine coolant is changed for any reason, the two coolant supplement pellets should be added to the reservoir. Following
installation of the pellets, minor hose joint leaks should be corrected in 30 to 60 minutes of engine operation. Water pump weep hole/drip collector
leaks should be corrected in 12 hours of normal operation. If leakage is not corrected within these time periods, additional diagnosis and corrective
action is required.

e. Start the engine and check for leaks.
