Malfunction Indicator Lamp On and Diagnostic Trouble Code P0440 in PCM Memory (Install New PCM Calibration)
Due to revisions in the procedure, this bulletin supercedes bulletin 96-T-09, which should be discarded.
MODELS AFFECTED:
1996 Saturns built before and including the following VINs:

TZ201459 - automatic transaxies
^
TZ201811 - manual transaxies
CONDITION:
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (SERVICE ENGINE SOON telltale lamp) may be On and diagnostic trouble code P0440 is present or stored in
PCM malfunction history with no other DTCs present.
CAUSE:
Trouble code diagnostics require recalibration.
CORRECTION:
Refer to the following procedures and download a new service calibration.
PROCEDURE
1.
Download the new service calibration. (Refer to "1996 Purge Diagnostic Enhancement Calibrations" chart shown.) Refer to "PCM Flash
Programming" under "General Description" in the "PCM Serial Data" section of the "1996 Powertrain Controls Service Manual" or the "Service
Stall Users Guide" for proper calibration procedures. The service stall system (SSS) and PDT must be at version 33.01 or greater.
