Air Bag: Service Precautions
WARNING: Safe handling of live and deployed air bag modules requires following the following procedures:
1. Perform SIR diagnostic system check under Reading and Diagnosing Codes as the first and last task during diagnosis and service.
2. Before attempting service on or around SIR components or wiring, disarm the SIR system as described under Air Bag System Disarming &
Arming.
3. The Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module (DERM) maintains voltage after the ignition switch is turned to OFF and the battery is disconnected. Wait
10 minutes for this back-up power to discharge before performing any service on the SIR system.
4. Inspect SIR system components after an accident that may or may not involve air bag deployment.
5. Use special electrical connector adapters when performing diagnostic tests.
6. Replace wiring terminals with special repair kits.
7. Never strike or jar a sensor in a way that could cause deployment.
8. If a sensor or DERM is dropped from a height greater than 2 feet or shows any signs of damage, replace the component.
9. Use caution in ensure proper location of the sensors to the vehicle structure. The keying of the sensors to the structure through differently sized
mounting holes and the wiring harness must not be modified for any reason.
10. All sensor and mounting bracket bolts must be carefully torqued to ensure proper operation.
11. Never power up the SIR system when any sensor is not rigidly attached to the vehicle.
12. Avoid touching the DERM terminals to prevent damage due to electrostatic discharge.
