Issue Date: February, 2004
TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN
Subject:
Hiss/Chirp Noise in Park or Neutral
(Install New Transmission Control Module (TCM) Calibration)
Models Affected:
2003-2004 VUE Vehicles
2003-2004 ION Vehicles
with VT25E (VTi) Transaxle (RPOs M75, M16)
Attention: Technician
Condition:
Some customers may comment on a hissing or chirping noise. This condition occurs at normal operating temperature when the transaxle is in Park or
Neutral position, and the engine RPM is at idle. The noise is similar to an alternator belt chirp or a vacuum leak.
Cause:
The noise may be caused by transaxle fluid passing through a sharp-edged orifice in the control valve body spacer (with gasket) plate assembly. When
the transaxle is in Park or Neutral position, line pressure fluctuates in order to clean the solenoids. This line pressure fluctuation contributes to the noise
condition.
Correction:
Install a new TCM calibration. The calibration lowers the line pressure used during the solenoid cleaning process.
Reprogram the TCM with the updated calibration established from the service matrix in this bulletin. Use Saturn Service Stall (555) software release TIS
11/2003 or higher data CD.
TCM Calibration Reprogram Procedure:
1.
Connect the Scan Tool/Service Stall to the vehicle.
2.
Using the vehicle application and VIN listed in the service matrix in this bulletin, select the proper replacement calibration and install into the
TCM.
3.
Reprogram the TCM. Refer to the Service Programming System (SPS) in the SSS User's Guide for reprogramming procedures.
