Calculating the “i” reduction ratio
Calculating the “i” reduction ratio
The reduction ratio between two pinions is obtained by dividing the number of cogs in the pinion driven by the number of cogs in the drive pinion.
Example:

 5th gearTapered unit
Drive Pinion (main)45 (Z1 Main)19 (Z1 Pinion)
Driven Pinion (secondary)34 (Z2 Secondary)60 (Z2 Crown)

i = Z2 : Z1 → Note
Hence, you can find:
ig = Reduction ratio in a gear
ig =
Z2 Secondary
Z1 Main
=
34
45
= 0.756
ia = Reduction ratio for the cone unit
ia =
Z2 Crown
Z1 Pinion
=
60
19
= 3.158
itotal = Total reduction ratio
It is obtained by multiplying the reduction ratios from the highest gear and the cone unit.
itotal = iG x iA = 0.756 x 3.158 = 2.387
1)  Z1 = Number of cogs on the drive pinion, Z2 = number of cogs on the driven pinion.
