  Note
t  Cleaning norms when working on automatic gearbox → Chapter.
t  General repair instructions → Chapter.
–  Install the left hand side complete half-shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive and 4WD; Rep. Gr.40.
   
–  Cover the opening in the gearbox for the complete half-shaft using a clean cloth -A-.
–  Fit tray -T20173- beneath gearbox.
–  Using a commercially available metal drill bit -B- (2 to 4 mm of Ø), drill a hole in the ring of the ring-seal outer plate.
  Note
Only the plate ring should be drilled; otherwise the gearbox may be damaged.

–  Extract the ring-seal by levering on the hole -C-.
  Note
When doing this, fit a base -B- on the surface of the gearbox to avoid damage.
–  Remove the cloth -A- and thoroughly clean the gearbox.
  WARNING
There should be no metal shavings in the gearbox nor in the opening for the complete half-shaft; if so, these must be removed by vacuuming.
If, by levering, only the plate ring could be removed from the ring-seal:
  A39-0390
–  Extract the remains of the ring-seal using a screwdriver as a lever -A-.
–  Smear the outside circumference and the lips of the seal with ATF.
l  Installation position: the open side of the seal faces the gearbox.
–  Fit the new seal by hand so that it is straight then press it in as far as possible so that the ring-seal is secured in the gearbox housing.

–  Fit the pressure tool -T10176- centred on the ring seal -A-.
–  Insert the seal ring, without tilting it until the pressure element is at the limit.
–  Install the left hand side complete half-shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive and 4WD; Rep. Gr.40.
–  ATF level: checking and filling → Chapter
