Right flanged shaft seal: replace

In order to avoid the sun gears from falling toward one side of the differential, always assemble/remove only one of the articulation flanges.

–	With the ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap.

Note

For vehicles fitted with a coded radio, first check the anti-theft code.

–	Remove the right hand side complete half-shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.

–	Fit tray -T20173- beneath gearbox.

–	Remove the securing bolt from the flanged shaft, by screwing two bolts onto the shaft and counter supporting the shaft with the help of an assembly lever.

–	Remove the flanged shaft with the spring, thrust washer and conical ring.

–	If the gearbox is outside the vehicle, remove the articulation flange seal, using the percussion extractor -U 40100/2-. Use the percussion tool until the seal is extracted.

–	If the gearbox is fitted in the vehicle, remove the articulation flange oil seal by levering it with a screwdriver.

Note

Take care not to damage the oil seal housing in the gearbox.

–	Fill the space between the lip seal and the dust guard with grease. → Spare Parts catalogue

Note

When the gearbox is removed use the adapter -U 40450/3- along with the tool -U 40450/6- to fit the seal to the casing.

–	Fit new seal as far as it will go using pressure tool -T20133- without tilting it.

–	Rotate the nut until the new seal is well fitted.

–	Fit the protective cover for the driveshaft, in case it is fitted, to the engine and tighten to a torque of 35 Nm.

–	Install the flanged shaft with the spring, thrust washer and conical ring.

–	Install the securing bolt on the flanged shaft. Use the retention tool -T20005- and tighten the bolt to 25 Nm.

–	Fit the right hand side complete half-shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.

–	Check gearbox oil level → Chapter.

–	Connect the battery earth strap.

Note

When the battery is re-connected, depending on which version, the vehicle equipment will have to be encoded.
