Removing –  Raise vehicle until weight is taken off front axle.

–  Unscrew and remove left hexagon bolt -arrow- for drive shaft/wheel hub.

–  Remove trim for air duct -arrows-. –  Remove air filter top part.

–  In vehicles with 6-cylinder engines, remove pipeline over right eyelet on engine.

–  In vehicles with 6-cylinder engines, remove vacuum line -a- and connector -b- before hooking support bracket into eyelet -arrow-.

–  Insert support bracket -10 - 222 A- with adapters -10 - 222 A/5- and secure with bolts of wing -arrows-.

–  Insert support bracket -10 - 222 A- with adapters -10 - 222 A/5- (6-cylinder engines adapters -10 - 222 A/3-) and support engine/gearbox in this position. –  Vehicles with coded radio unit, note or obtain code. –  Remove battery.

–  Remove bolts of left gearbox mounting -arrows-. –  Raise vehicle. –  Remove noise insulation tray.

–  Remove pendulum support -1- by removing bolt and nuts -A-. At the start of series production, supports with two and three holes were produced for mounting on the subframe. Following a brief startup phase, production changed over to a support with one hole. Only the support with one hole is supplied as a replacement part. If this support is installed in a vehicle that was previously equipped with another support then it is necessary to fit two spacers 2.5 mm thick.

–  Remove electrical connections -arrows- on gearbox. –  Disconnect speedometer connector at bearing housing. –  Disconnect drive shafts at flanges.

–  Remove bracket -A- of bearing for right flange shaft -arrows-. –  Turn steering to right lock and remove flange shaft -B-. Vehicles with 1.8 l/110 kW petrol engine and vehicles with diesel engine

–  Unscrew bearing for right flange shaft -1--arrows A- and pull flange shaft out of gearbox. –  Unscrew support -2- from engine/gearbox -arrows B- to -D-. –  Guide support past speedometer sender -3- when removing. Continuation for all vehicles

–  Separate left threaded connection -arrow- between wheel bearing housing and lower swivel joint. –  Turn steering to left full lock and press drive shaft out of wheel bearing housing. –  Remove left drive shaft, taking care not to damage multi-function switch. –  Using spindles of support bracket, lower engine/gearbox until bolts of left gearbox mounting can be accessed.

–  Remove 2 bolts -arrows- from left gearbox mounting on gearbox. –  Position gearbox mounting at top left in battery box and screw in bolts until finger-tight. –  Remove starter → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.

–  Move selector lever to position “P” and remove selector lever cable from selector shaft lever. –  First unlock selector lever cable -1- then remove it from support bracket -2-. –  Unclip support bracket of selector lever cable and remove selector lever cable.

–  Clamp-off ATF cooler hoses with -3094- and detach at ATF cooler. –  Pull white connector off gearbox at top next to ATF cooler (gearbox speed sender -G38-). –  Remove upper engine/gearbox securing bolts. –  Use socket V/175 to unscrew converter cover plate and nuts (qty. 3) off converter.

–  Set up gearbox support -3282-. To remove the automatic gearbox 099, set up gearbox support -3282- with adjustment plate -3282/22 A-. –  Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- with gearbox support -3282- under gearbox and support gearbox.

–  Screw gearbox mounting -3282- tight with drilled-through sheet on hole of converter cover plate -arrow-. –  Remove lower engine/gearbox securing bolts. –  Press gearbox off engine while simultaneously pressing torque converter out of drive plate. –  Press torque converter against ATF pump. –  Lower gearbox slightly. –  Swivel gearbox and carefully lower. –  Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out.
