Checking air mass meter

Note:

Only gold-plated contacts can be used to repair contacts in the connector for the air mass meter.

Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required

  • ◆ Fault reader V.A.G 1551 or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with cable V.A.G 1551/3
  • ◆ Test box V.A.G 1598/31
  • ◆ Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or multimeter V.A.G 1715

  • ◆ Current flow diagram

Check conditions

N01-0485
  • ● → All fuses must be OK.
  • ● The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
  • ● Fuel pump relay must be OK
  • ● All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window heating must be switched off
  • ● If the vehicle is equipped with an air conditioner, this must be switched off.
  • ● On vehicles with automatic gearbox selector lever in "P" or "N" position
  • ● Coolant temperature must be at least 85 °C, =>display group 04, display zone 3.

Test sequence

  • ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 (V.A.G 1552). Start engine and select "Address word" 01 of engine control unit. When doing this the engine must be running at idling speed.
(Connecting fault reader and selecting engine control unit .)

If the specification is not obtained
=> Page 24-53, Evaluating display group 2

  • ‒ If the value is as specified but the fault memory has recorded a fault relating to the air mass meter, test the signal and earth wires of the air mass meter => Page 24-55.

If the specification is attained:

  • ‒ Press ⇒key.
  • ‒ Press keys 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q key.
  • ‒ Switch off ignition.

Evaluating display group 2, display zone 4 - Air mass drawn in

Appears on display

Possible fault cause

Fault elimination

Less than 2.5 g/s

- Large amount of unmetered air between intake manifold and air mass meter

- Rectify unmetered air

More than 5.0 g/s

- Gear selected (automatic gearbox)

- Place selector lever in P or N

- Engine loaded due to ancillaries

- Eliminate load (air conditioner, power assisted steering etc.)

Note on display zone 4:

  • ◆ Displayed is the air mass measured by the air mass meter.
  • ◆ The replacement value in g/s from throttle valve potentiometer will be displayed if the engine control unit detects a fault on the air mass meter.

Testing power supply to air mass meter

N24-1286
  • ‒ → Pull 5-pin connector off air mass meter (G70) with intake air temperature sender (G42) -arrow-.

M24-0023
  • ‒ → Connect multimeter to measure voltage on connector contact 2 and engine earth.
  • ‒ Start engine and run at idling speed.
        Specification: 11.0...15.0 V

If no voltage is present:

  • ‒ Switch off ignition.

M24-0032
  • ‒ Check wire between 5-pin connector contact 2 and fuel pump relay (J17) for open circuit using current flow diagram.
        Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ω

If the voltage supply and wiring is OK:

  • ‒ → Connect multimeter to measure voltage on connector contact 4 and engine earth.
  • ‒ Switch on ignition.
        Specification: min. 4.5 V

If no voltage is present:

  • ‒ Switch off ignition.

N24-1200
  • ‒ Check the signal and earth wires => Page 24-55.

Testing signal and earth wires for air mass meter

  • ‒ Remove battery.
  • ‒ → Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control unit wiring harness. The engine control unit remains disconnected.

M24-0024
  • ‒ → Check wiring for open circuit between test box and 5-pin connector using current flow diagram.
        Contact 5+socket 29
        Contact 4+socket 53
        Contact 3+socket 27
        Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 ω
  • ‒ Additionally check wires all for short to one another.
        Specification: ∞ω
  • ‒ Check wiring additionally for short circuit to battery positive/earth.

If no wiring fault is detected:

  • ‒ Renew air mass meter (G70).
  • ‒ Interrogate fault memory, if necessary, repair any faults and then erase fault memory => Page 01-16, interrogating and erasing fault memory.
  • ‒ Read-out the readiness code=> Page 01-64.
