Installing a new balancer shaft module
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Locking device -T10255-
  W00-10250
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
Procedure
  Note
t  The spur gear drive of the balancer shaft module must be installed with correct tooth backlash.
t  A coating is applied to the new intermediate gear wheel to set the correct tooth backlash.
t  Intermediate gear wheels with white spot are coated to areas around the circumference, the intermediate gear wheel without white spot is fully coated around the circumference.
t  The coating is quickly worn away which in turn sets the correct tooth backlash.
t  For this reason a new balancer shaft module must always be installed with a new intermediate gear wheel with the special coating.
t  A white spot is positioned only on partly coated intermediate gear wheel to ensure correct installation position.
t  For intermediate gear wheels with coating around the circumference the installation position is not relevant.
t  Renew the bolts tightened with specified tightening angle.
l  Crankshaft locked with crankshaft stop -T10100-.
  Caution
The threaded connection of intermediate gear wheel must be loosened to position the balancer shaft module. When doing this, do not loosen the bolt fully to prevent that the thrust washer does not slip behind the intermediate gear wheel. Thrust washer installation position → Fig.

–  Before positioning balancer shaft module on cylinder block, loosen bolt -1- for intermediate gear wheel approx. 1/4 turn
–  Ensure both dowel sleeves are in place to correctly position the balancer shaft module on the cylinder block.
  A17-10157
–  Position balancer shaft module on cylinder block, observe correct position of partly coated intermediate gear wheel when doing this:
l  The white spot -arrow- on the intermediate gear wheel must be positioned centrally on the crankshaft.
  Note
t  Take care not to damage the coating on the intermediate gear wheel.
t  Due to the gear ratio the white spot -arrow- will not be in its original position after turning the engine over.
  A17-10158
–  Initially screw bolts -1 ... 8- in finger-tight.
–  Tighten bolts of balancer shaft module as follows:
1.  Initially tighten bolts in the sequence -1 ... 8- to 6 Nm.
2.  Tighten bolts -5- and -7- to 13 Nm.
3.  Turn bolts -5- and -7- 90° further (1/4 turn) using a rigid wrench.
4.  Tighten bolts -1 ... 4-, -6- and -8- to 20 Nm.
5.  Turn bolts -1 ... 4-, -6- and -8- 90° further (1/4 turn) using a rigid wrench.
  A13-10207
–  Lock balancer shaft using locking tool -T10255-, turn balancer shaft if necessary.
l  Locking tool pin must engage in groove in balancer shaft when doing this.
  A13-10206
–  Carefully fit the balancer shaft gear wheel onto the balancer shaft, push intermediate gear wheel to side for this.
  Note
t  Ensure the threaded holes in the balancer shaft are as central as possible within the elongated holes of the balancer shaft gear wheel.
t  If the elongated holes in the balancer shaft gear wheel cannot be aligned to the threaded holes, then the balancer shaft gear wheel must be turned by the respective number of teeth and fitted again.
–  Tighten bolts for balancer shaft gear wheel -arrows-.
–  Remove pin -T10255-.
  A17-10160
The following 3 procedures must be performed simultaneously (2nd mechanic required):
–  Press intermediate gear wheel -3- forcefully (with assistance of a wooden block if necessary) in -direction of arrow- into teeth of drive gear wheel -2- and balancer shaft gear wheel -1- (meshing together).
–  Turn balancer shaft gear wheel lightly anti-clockwise for this.
–  Tighten bolt for intermediate gear wheel.
–  Remove crankshaft stop.
  Note
No backlash may be perceptible after installing intermediate gear wheel. This can be checked by hand using light force.
Further installation is carried out in the reverse sequence.
