Fuel tank: draining > < Fuel tank

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Adapter for draining the fuel -VAS 5190 /3-
t  Test instrument adapter/DSO (5-pin) -VAS 5565-
t  Remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A-
  WARNING
t  Fuel supply line is pressurised. Wear safety goggles and protective clothing to avoid possible injury and skin contact. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.
t  Secure the earth cable of the fuel extractor -VAS 5190- to an earthing point on the vehicle.
Perform the following work:
   
–  Disconnect fuel pipe -arrow-, and clean spills with a cloth.

Press in safety ring to release fuel lines.

–  Connect the fuel drainage equipment -VAS 5190- to the fuel supply line using the adapter for draining the fuel -VAS 5190 /3-.
–  Remove the rear seat bench → Bodywork, interior fitting work; Rep. gr.72

–  Remove the cover -1- of the fuel delivery unit together with the fuel pump control unit -J538--2-.

–  Pull off connector -arrow-.

–  Connect the adapter for the DSO measuring/oscilloscope module (5 contacts) -VAS 5565-to the connector in the fuel supply unit.
–  Connect the remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- to the measurement adapter / DSO (5 pin) -VAS 5565- and to battery positive (+).
  Note
The following operation is to make the fuel pump run when the engine is stopped.
–  Remove the filler cap from fuel filler neck.
–  Press the remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- and the shut-off cock of the fuel drainage equipment -VAS 5190- until the fuel tank is empty.
  Caution
The high-pressure pump must not be allowed to run while still empty.
