Safety precautions when working on fuel supply system
  WARNING
The fuel pressure in the high-pressure pipe may be as high as 120 bar. Remember safety precautions for pressure reduction in the high-pressure system .
t  High pressure system pressure reduction → Chapter.
t  Fuel supply line is pressurised. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury and contact with skin. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.
For reasons of safety, the power supply to the fuel pump must be interrupted before the fuel system is opened. The fuel pump would otherwise be activated when the driver's door is opened. Use the following possibilities for interrupting the power supply:
Disconnecting battery
Or
Remove the fuse for the fuel pump control unit -J538-.
Or
Disconnect the connector on the flange of the fuel supply unit or on the fuel pump control unit -J538-.
  Caution
When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the cramped conditions:
t  Route all the various lines (e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, active carbon filter system, coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum pipes and hoses) and electrical wiring so that the original positions are restored.
t  In order to avoid damage to the lines, ensure sufficient clearance for all moving or hot components.
To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the fuel injection and ignition system, the following must be noted:
t  Do not touch or remove the ignition coils with output stage while the engine running or idling.
t  The ignition must be switched off before connecting or disconnecting injection or ignition system wiring or tester cables.

t  For safety reasons, if the batter terminals are not disconnected, fuse SC27 on the left-hand side of the instrument panel must be removed from fuse holder before the fuel system is opened, seeing as the fuel pump can be activated by the door contact switch in the driver door.
For removal and fitting the fuel level sender or the fuel pump (fuel supply unit) when the fuel tank is full or partially full, observe the following:
t  Before commencing work, switch on exhaust extraction system and place an extraction hose close to the sender opening in the fuel tank to extract escaping petrol fumes. If no exhaust gas extraction system is available, a radial fan with a displacement greater than 15 m3/h can be used providing that motor is not in air flow.
t  Avoid skin contact with the fuel! Use fuel resistant gloves!
Please note the following if test equipment has to be used during a test drive:
t  Testers and measuring instruments must always be secured to the rear seat and operated by a 2nd person from this location.
t  If test and measuring instruments are operated from front passenger's seat and the vehicle is involved in an accident, there is a possibility that the person sitting in this seat may receive serious injuries when the airbag is triggered.
