Safety precautions when working on fuel supply system |
WARNING The fuel pressure in the high-pressure pipe may be as high as 120 bar. Remember safety precautions for pressure reduction in the high-pressure system . |
t
| High pressure system pressure reduction → Chapter. |
t
| Fuel supply line is pressurised. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury and contact with skin. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection. |
For reasons of safety, the power supply to the fuel pump must be interrupted before the fuel system is opened. The fuel pump would otherwise be activated when the driver's door is opened. Use the following possibilities for interrupting the power supply: |
Remove the fuse for the fuel pump control unit -J538-. |
Disconnect the connector on the flange of the fuel supply unit or on the fuel pump control unit -J538-. |
|
Caution When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the cramped conditions: |
t
| Route all the various lines (e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, active carbon filter system, coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum pipes and hoses) and electrical wiring so that the original positions are restored. |
t
| In order to avoid damage to the lines, ensure sufficient clearance for all moving or hot components. |
|
To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the fuel injection and ignition system, the following must be noted: |
t
| Do not touch or remove the ignition coils with output stage while the engine running or idling. |
t
| The ignition must be switched off before connecting or disconnecting injection or ignition system wiring or tester cables. |
