t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
t  Engine speed adjuster -V.A.G 1788/10-
Check conditions
l  Fuses no. 15, 18, 20 and 21, OK.
l  Vehicle stationary
l  If the vehicle is equipped with an air conditioner, this must be switched off.
l  Exhaust system between catalytic converter and cylinder head must be free of leaks
l  Coolant temperature, 80 °C, minimum → display group 04, display field 3.
l  Intake air temperature less than 60 °C → display group 04, display field 4.
Work sequence
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551/V.A.G 1552-. Start engine and enter “Address code” 01 to select engine control unit. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter).
Operation 1: Interrogate fault memory

Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0 and 2 for function “Interrogate fault memory” and confirm entry with Q -key.

The display shows the number of faults stored or “No fault recognised!”
If a fault is stored:
–  Rectify faults printed out using fault table:
   SAE P0 codes → Chapter
   SAE P1 codes → Chapter
If no fault is stored:
–  Press -key.
Operation 2: Erase fault memory
 
X Faults recognised!                    
Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0 and 5 for the function “Erase fault memory” and confirm entry with Q -key.
  Note!
The readiness code returns to zero or is cleared each time the fault memory is cleared.

  Note!
If the ignition is switched off between “Interrogate fault memory” and “Erase fault memory” the fault memory will not be erased.
–  Press -key.
  Note!
Do not shut off engine during the operations be low.
Operation 3: diagnosis of activated charcoal filter system; (fuel tank venting system)

Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0 and 4 for the function “Introduction of basic setting” and confirm entry with Q -key.

–  Press keys 0, 7 and 0 for “Display group number 70” and confirm entry with Q -key.
 
Basic setting

Indicated on display: (1...4 = Display fields)
–  If the diagnosis is initiated by engine control unit the display in display field 4 jumps from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”
–  Continue with the engine idling until display field 4 reads:
   Specification: “TVV OK”
If the display does not indicate as described:
–  Interrogate fault memory → Chapter.
–  Give 3 throttle bursts and repeat the diagnostic.
If the display indicates as described:
–  Press C -key.
Operation 4: Lambda probe ageing diagnostic (period monitoring)

–  Press keys 0, 3 and 4 for “Display group number 34” and confirm entry with Q -key.

–  Give two throttle bursts, raising rpms over 5000.
–  Set an engine speed of 1500...3900 rpm with speed regulator -V.A.G 1788/10-:
–  Maintain rpms until display in display field 4 changes from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”.
–  Continue with the engine at same rpms until display field 4 reads:
   Specification: ”B1-P1 OK”
–  Press -key.

–  Check operational status of Lambda regulation before catalytic converter (display field 1):
   Specification: 111 (meaning → Anchor)
–  Check operational status of Lambda regulation after catalytic converter (display field 2):
   Specification: 110 (meaning → Anchor)
  Note!
The third bit in display field 2 will only change to 1 when the engine is running at part throttle 2500-4000 rpm)
If the specifications are not attained:
–  Interrogate fault memory → Chapter.
If the specifications are obtained:
–  Press -key.
Operation 5: Catalytic converter diagnosis
  Note!
This diagnosis only ends when there are no faults related to the Lambda probes or the activated charcoal system.
 
Read measured value block 30          ->

–  Press keys 0 and 4 for the function “Introduction of basic setting” and confirm entry with Q -key.

–  Maintain engine speed at 1500...3900 rpm until the display in in display field 4 changes from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”. The catalytic converter temperature in display field 2 must be 300 °C, minimum.
–  Maintain engine speed at 1500...3900 rpm until the display in in display field 4 reads “Cat B1 OK”.
  Note!
It may take a few minutes for the reading to change from “Test ON” to “Cat B1 OK”
If the specifications are not attained:
–  Interrogate fault memory → Chapter.
If the specifications are obtained:
–  Press C -key.
Operation 6: exhaust gas system diagnosis

–  Press keys 0, 7 and 5 for “Display group number 75” and confirm entry with Q -key.

–  Give 5 throttle bursts, raising RPMs to max.
If the diagnosis is initiated by engine control unit the display in display field 4 jumps from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”
–  Continue with the engine idling until display field 4 reads:
   Specification: “Syst. OK”
If the display does not indicate as described:
–  Interrogate fault memory → Chapter.
If the display indicates as described:
–  Press -key.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q -key.
–  Interrogate readiness code → Chapter.
