check operation and electricity supply Test prerequisites l  Battery voltage min. 11.5 V l  Fuse for Fuel pump control unit -J538- OK. l  Fuel pump control unit -J538- OK. Checking process:   Note t  Function of fuel pump is checked using final control diagnosis. t  Removing and installing fuel delivery unit → Chapter. –  Observe safety precautions → Chapter. –  Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.

–  Connect vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 50XX--1- as follows: –  Connect diagnosis cable connector -2- to diagnostic connection in driver footwell. –  Switch on ignition. –  Press one after the other in the display the buttons for Vehicle self-diagnosis, Engine electronics and Final control diagnosis. –  Press right arrow button on display up to final control diagnosis for fuel pump electronics. The fuel pump must now start up.   Note The fuel pump runs very quietly. –  Switch off ignition. If fuel pump does not run: –  Remove bench seat → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.72.

–  Unclip cover -1- at retaining tabs -arrows-, using removal wedge -3409-.

–  Check that connector -1- is fitted securely by pulling connector without pressing catch. If connector was not inserted correctly, repeat functional check of fuel pump. –  Release connector -1- and unplug. –  Check contacts on connector and on fuel delivery unit -3- for damage.

–  Connect test instrument adapter/DSO (5-pin) -VAS 5565- to connector and fuel delivery unit. –  Connect multimeter -V.A.G 1526D- to cables -1- and -5- of test instrument adapter/DSO (5-pin) -VAS 5565-. –  Initiate final control diagnosis again and measure voltage at fuel pump. l  Specification: Approx. battery voltage Voltage supply not OK: –  Locate and eliminate open circuit referring to current flow diagram → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations. Power supply is okay:   WARNING Fuel supply line is pressurised. Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and skin contact. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.

–  Disconnect fuel line -2- from fuel delivery unit -3-. Separate push-on couplings → Chapter. –  Release connector -1- and unplug.

–  Open locking ring using union nut wrench -3217-. –  Check that the electrical wires between flange and fuel pump are connected. If there is cable integrity: –  Fuel pump is defective, renew fuel delivery unit → Chapter.
