Depending on the ambient, traffic and speed conditions, the main beam assist switches on and off automatically. The controlling is carried out via the light detection sensor -G399- on the base of the rear view mirror and the main beam assist control unit -J844-.
In order to activate the main beam assist, turn the light switch to the AUTO position with the ignition turned on and actuate the main beam briefly on the indicator and main beam lever. The main beam assist is also switched off when the ignition is switched off.
The following operations may be the cause that the main beam assist does not switch off the activated main beam in time or at all:
t  On poorly illuminated roads and with roof signs or traffic signs that have an intensive reflection.
t  With participants in road traffic that have insufficient illumination, such as pedestrians or bicycles.
t  In tight curves with vehicles coming from the other direction are difficult to see, on humps or raised surfaces.
t  Vehicles coming from the other direction on roads with central reservation when the drive has a view above the central reservation, e.g. HGV drivers.
t  Failure of a sensor for detecting light or the power supply is interrupted.
t  Fog, snow or heavy rainfall.
t  Dust and sand being blow in the air.
t  Stone chipping in the field of vision of the light detection sensor.
t  If the field of vision of the light detection sensor mists up, is dirty or is covered by a sticker, snow or ice.
  Note
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the main beam assist can also be carried out using the Front camera for driver assistance systems -R242- → Chapter.
Fault detection and fault display:
The main beam assist control unit -J844- is equipped with self-diagnosis.
For fault finding, use vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051A- or vehicle diagnosis and service information system -VAS 5052- in „Guided fault finding“ mode.
