Removing –  Remove engine cover.   Note To perform these tasks, the battery earth strap must be removed. The vehicle should be checked for a fitted radio. If necessary obtain radio anti-theft code first. –  With the ignition switched off, release the battery earth strap. –  Remove air cleaner housing; gasoline engines → Rep. Gr.24 and diesel engines → Rep. Gr.23. –  Remove battery → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.

–  Extract the bolts -arrows- and extract battery bracket.

–  Remove safety washer -1- that secures the connector cable to the selector rod. –  Remove the connector cable from the pivot. –  Loosen the nut of the deflection cable and detach the shaft → Item   Note -Item 2- can be disregarded.   Note There are two types of transfer levers: plastic and metal. Metal idler rod –  Remove the retunr lever → Chapter Plastic idler rod: –  Remove the retunr lever → Chapter Continuation for all versions

–  Release the gear engagement and selection cables bracket -arrows- from the gearbox casing. –  Remove the pipe -A- from the bracket on the gearbox. –  Remove the bracket securing the pipe -A- on the gearbox. –  Remove the clutch slave cylinder -B- from the gearbox casing.   Note Do not operate the clutch pedal during this operation.

–  Extract the connector -arrow- from the speedometer sender -G22-. –  Remove the upper attachment bolt from the engine with the gearbox casing. –  Extract the upper starter securing bolt. –  Raise the vehicle and remove the left front wheel.

–  Vehicles with diesel engine: Unscrew bolts - 1 … 3- and remove center noise insulation.

–  Vehicles with diesel engine: Unscrew bolts -1- … -2- and remove center noise insulation. –  Remove sound proofing → Body, install outside; Rep. Gr.66.

–  Extract the bolts from the exhaust system double clamp -1- and remove the clamp. –  Disconnect the lambda probe connector -2-. –  Separate the exhaust gas system by the double clamp behind the front section of the exhaust tube → Rep. Gr.26. –  Secure the front section of the exhaust tube to the bodywork, in the area of the catalytic converter with a wire.

–  Remove the earth cable from the lower engine/gearbox attachment bolt -1-. –  Disconnect electrical connection -2- for the reversing light switch -F4-. –  Remove the bracket -3- from the gearbox -arrow- and secure it to the side along with the cables. –  Removing the starter motor → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27. –  Remove articulated shaft → Running gear, shafts, steering; Rep. Gr.40.

–  Remove pendulum support -arrows-.   Note Before removing the bolts, mark the fitting positions with respect to the strut.

–  The screws -1-attaching the left axle on axle guide flange. Always replace –  Release the link bar -2- from the stabiliser bar -arrow-. –  Fold the sleeve outwards.

–  Fit the support stand -U-30025E-.   Note t  Ensure that the pipe connections and the cables in the area where the engine is suspended do not suffer any damage while fitting the hooks of the support equipment. t  When inserting the bracket -U-30025E- to make sure that the supporting feet firmly in the profile of flank and remain the rod of the tool. Look in tThe middle of the gear without damaging the body. –  Slightly tense the engine assembly/gearbox via the spindles.

–  Unscrew the securing screws -arrow- from the bracket on the gearbox. Always replace

–  Lower the engine assembly/gearbox using both spindles until the gearbox console attachment bolts -A- are accessible from the wheel housing. –  Remove the console -A- from the gearbox. –  Extract the attachment bolts -arrows- for the gearbox console as described below.   Note When lowering the engine assembly/gearbox ensure that the gearbox does not rest on the subframe. –  Apply the gear bracket -T20138C- on theengine-/gear box lifter -SAT 1040-.

–  Install theengine-/gear box -SAT 1040- with thegear box lifter -T20138C- on the underside of the vehicle and connect to the gear box.. –  Extract the lower attachment bolts from the engine/gearbox. –  Move the engine assembly forwards and insert a wooden wedge between the subframe and the engine. –  Release the gearbox from the centre guides and rotate it towards the subframe. –  Lower the gearbox very carefully. –  Mount gearbox on assembly stand → Chapter.
