The differential drive should always be readjusted when any of the following components have been changed:
t  Gearbox
t  clutch housing
t  Differential casing
t  Tapered roller bearings for differential
Adjustment chart → Chapter.
Consult the equivalence table for tools and equipment according to applicability among Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter.

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Socket -T20020-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Extractor kit -T20140-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Counterhold -U 10103-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Kit (case) -U 40200A-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Kit (case) -U 40300-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Kit (case) -U 40450A-, see equivalent → Anchor

Insert the outer ring of the roller bearing into the clutch casing
l  Insert the outer roller bearing ring with a 0.65 mm shim into the clutch casing.
–  Press the gearbox casing directly onto the base of the bearing using the kit (case) -U 40200A- .
  Note
The inner and outer roller bearing rings are paired. Do not mix them up.
  E39-0079
Fitting the outer ring of the roller bearing into the gearbox casing
–  Support the gearbox casing on the adapter -U 40450/1- with the adapter -U 40450/11-, theadapter -U 40450/4-, the adapter -U 40450/5- and the adapter -U 40450/10- and as a base for connecting the inner ring, the installation tool -U 10103-.
–  Place the differential on the clutch housing.
–  Fit on the gearbox casing and tighten the 5 bolts with the correct torque.
–  Press the differential towards the clutch casing rotating it 8 times.
–  Press the differential drive towards the gearbox casing rotating it 8 times.
–  Fit the support -T20020- and the measurement tool together onto the gearbox casing.
  E39-0261
–  Fit the gauge and set to “0” with a pretension of 1 mm.
A - 30 mm gauge extension
–  Move the differential gear up and down while reading the measurement on the gauge and noting the results (for example: 0.70 mm).
Determining thickness of shim:
The specified pre-tension for the bearing is obtained by adding a constant pressure value (0.25 mm) to the measured value.
  E39-0087
Example:
Average value0.70 mm
+ Pressure (const. value)0.25 mm
Shim thickness =0.95 mm

–  Determine the thickness of the washer or shim by using the table → Spare parts catalogue.
The following shims are used:

Thickness of shims → Note → Note in mm
0,650,851,051,25
0,700,901,10
0,750,951,15
0,801,001,20

1)  If the size of the shim required is larger than those listed in the table, install two shims amounting to the correct value. In this case, fit the thicker shim first.
2)  The existence of different tolerances allows the necessary shim thickness to be selected precisely.
–  Remove the gearbox casing.

Remove the outer ring of the roller bearing from the gearbox casing
–  Use the extractor kit -T20140- with adaptor -T20140/30-.
–  Fit the washer or shims of the required thickness (thickest first).
–  Re-insert the outer ring and tighten the gearbox casing with the correct torque.
  E39-0223
Fitting the outer ring of the roller bearing into the gearbox casing
–  Support the gearbox casing on the adapter -U 40450/1- with the adapter -U 40450/11-, theadapter -U 40450/4-, the adapter -U 40450/5- and the adapter -U 40450/10- and as a base for connecting the inner ring, the installation tool -U 10103-.
