Operation process It is necessary to readjust the differential when the following components are renewed: t  Gearbox t  clutch housing t  Differential casing t  Tapered roller bearing of differential

The shim S1 is no longer installed for the taper roller bearing outer race in gearboxes from manufacturing week 49.2006 Bearing seat for tapered roller bearing outer race adapted. –  Measure the depth of the bearing seat for tapered roller bearing outer race in gearbox housing.

Continuation for all vehicles –  Adapt the outer -A- of the conical roller bearing (mobile pinion) into the gearbox, where applicable, use shim S1 (always a thickness of 1 mm).   Note Inner and outer tapered roller bearing races are paired. Do not interchange.

–  Press tapered roller bearing outer race (opposite gear wheel) with no shim into gearbox housing. –  Insert differential in gearbox housing. –  Install the clutch housing and tighten the 5 bolts to the respective tightening torque → Item.

–  Insert the measurement device and gauge (measurement range 3 mm, gauge extension -A- of about 30 mm). –  Adjust the dial gauge to „0“ with a pre-tension of 1 mm. –  Move the differential upwards and downwards, read the play indicated by the gauge and note it (in the example: 1.50 mm). Determine the S2 shim thickness: The specified bearing preload is obtained for S2 by adding a constant value for preload (0.35 mm) to the measured value. Example:

Average value	1.50 mm
+ Preload (constant)	0.35 mm
Thickness of shim =	1.85 mm

–  Remove the clutch housing and release the outer ring of the conical roller bearing -A-. The various thicknesses make it possible to achieve the exact shim thickness required.   Note t  See → Electronic catalogue of spare parts „ETKA“ to allocate thrust rings. t  If the thickness required for the thrust ring is greater than that indicated in the → Electronic catalogue of spare parts„ETKA“, 2 rings with a total thickness equal to the required thickness may be used.

–  Fit the S2 shim of the determined thickness (in the example: 1.85 mm). Spare part number → Electronic spare parts catalogue „ETKA“. –  Insert the outer ring of the conical roller bearing into the clutch housing. –  Fit the clutch casing Tightening torque → Item
