5th/6th gear: Install > < Dismantling
Assembling
Assembling
–  Place the differential on the clutch housing.
   
–  Sealing washers -arrows- must always be renewed.
  Note
The figure only shows 3 or 4 bolts with their O-ring gaskets.

Gearbox with selector lever for reverse gear -arrow-

–  Insert the input shaft -1- and secondary shaft -2- together.
–  Partially screw the 4 nuts crosswise on the secondary shaft bearing cover, and tighten to corresponding torque → Item.
–  Place the mobile pinion for reverse gear -3- onto the needle bearing of the clutch housing.
The groove -arrow- should face away from the clutch housing.
–  Ensure that reverse shaft -4- is complete → Chapter; do not yet fit reverse shaft support to reverse shaft.
–  Fit the reverse shaft into clutch housing.
–  Clean all locking fluid away from all threaded holes in reverse shaft support; a thread cutter may be used for this purpose.
–  Place the reverse shaft support on this threaded hole.

–  Mount the gear prong of the reverse gear -1- with the support for the gear prong of the reverse gear -2-, the spring -3- and the slide -4-.

Installation position: reverse gear

–  Tighten the bolts of the gear selection mechanism of the reverse gear -A- to 25 Nm.
–  Install the gear prong -B- along with the selector plates.
The screwing surface of the reverse shaft support -C- is located in front of selector plates.

Gearbox with locking collar for reverse gear -arrow-

l  Clean all locking fluid away from all threaded holes in reverse shaft support; a thread cutter may be used for this purpose.
l  Place the output shaft -1-, the input shaft -2- and the inverter shaft -3- on a work bench as shown in the illustration.
l  The splines -arrow- of the locking collar of the points crown points to the selector gear of reverse gear.

Disregard item 3435

–  Insert the output shaft -1-, the input shaft -2- and the inverter shaft -3- together.
Output shaft -2- contacts differential.
–  In order to be able to insert the output shaft -2- into the differential gearbox, the differential gearbox may have to be rotated (have a second mechanic help).
–  Tighten the nuts and the bearing support of the differential gearbox to the respective tightening torque → Item.

–  Install the gear prong -A- along with the selector plates.
Reverse shaft support -B- is located in front of selector plates.
l  The reverse gear with selector strip engages in the reverse gear locking collar -arrow-:

Continued for all vehicles
–  Screw M 8 x 100 mm studs -A- into reverse shaft support so that shaft is aligned after gearbox housing is fitted.
–  Align gear selector plates.
  Note
The selector segments must be positioned in the grooves on the locking collars.
–  Apply sealing compound → Spare parts catalogue evenly to sealing surface of clutch housing.
–  Fit gearbox housing.
Insert the bolts for reverse gear shaft support -arrow- as shown:
–  Insert the bolt -a-.
–  Remove stud -A- (⇒ top illustration).

–  Fit bolt -c-
Tightening sequence:
–  Tighten bolt -a- to 30 Nm.
–  Tighten the bolt -b- (⇒ bottom illustration) to 25 Nm.

–  Screw in bolts -arrow-. Tightening torque → Item

–  Install the bearing bolts -arrow- for the gearbox prongs. To do this align selector mechanism using a screwdriver so that the relevant pivot pin can be inserted.
–  Apply a layer of sealing compound → Spare parts catalogue evenly, onto the cover sealing surface .
–  Fit cover plate for selector shaft.

Fit the selection shaft with the cover as shown below:
–  Place the gearshift lever in neutral position.
–  Apply sealing compound → Spare parts catalogue evenly on to the sealing surface of the selector shaft cover.
–  Move the selector shaft to neutral.
–  Insert the selector shaft so that selector finger -arrow- is engaged in selector plates.
–  Mount the selector shaft cover, and fasten it with two bolts. Tightening torque → Item.
–  Screw in gear control cover for selector shaft. Tightening torque → Item

–  Install both flange shafts with springs, thrust washers and tapered rings → Chapter.
