Renewing seal for right flange shaft Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Press tool -3158-

t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331- t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332- t  Grease -G 052 128 A1- t  Universal grease -G 052 735- Detaching –  Remove right wheel. –  Remove noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50. –  Remove right drive shaft → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.40. Vehicles with intermediate shaft

–  After removing right drive shaft -A-, unbolt intermediate shaft -B- from bearing bracket -C--arrows- and pull out stub shaft of gearbox. Continuation for all vehicles –  Place container under the gearbox.

–  Remove securing bolts -arrow- for stub shaft or flange shaft. –  Pull out stub shaft or flange shaft together with compression spring. –  Pry seal out using assembly lever. Installing –  Lightly oil outer circumference of oil seal. –  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip half-full with sealing grease -G 052 128-.

–  Drive in new seal onto stop (take care to keep seal straight). –  Insert stub shaft or flange shaft. –  Screw in new countersunk bolt for securing stub shaft or flange shaft and tighten to 30 Nm. Vehicles with intermediate shaft –  Renew O-ring of stub shaft. –  Grease splines of stub shaft with grease for clutch plate splines -G 000 100-.

–  Guide intermediate shaft -B- through bearing bracket -C- onto stub shaft of gearbox. –  Bolt intermediate shaft to bearing bracket to specified torque -arrows- → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.40. Continuation for all vehicles –  Install right drive shaft → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.40. –  Install right wheel → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.44. –  Check oil level and top up → Chapter. –  Install noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
